Hurricanes are one of the most destructive forces on earth, capable of laying waste to entire cities and leaving behind a path of flooding and destruction. A category five hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale is capable of winds in excess of 150 miles per hour (mph). To withstand such forces, bridges, buildings, and fence walls must be constructed to be resistant to wind gusts and torrential rains.
This article focuses on fence wall types and their ability to be resistant and protective during such destructive natural disasters. As wood fencing and vinyl walls are not designed to withstand the high wind speeds experienced in a hurricane, they are not hurricane resistant. Such materials are often completely destroyed by wind and rain.
Concrete Hurricane Fences
Standard fencing produced with the StoneTree™ Precast Concrete Forms can withstand winds up to 90 mph. Though this resistance is adequate for most areas in the world that do not experience hurricanes, more reinforcement is necessary for the Eastern region of the United States and other places around the world that experience hurricanes.
For regions likely to experience hurricane winds, AFTEC has developed hurricane wall fences that can be manufactured with the StoneTree™ Precast Concrete Forms capable of withstanding winds up to 150 mph.
Hurricane resistant fence walls are stronger than standard fences due mainly to two changes to the walls: additional steel reinforcing in the precast concrete and larger footings to support the stronger fencing.
